Study of Postpartum Alopecia

The study involved 98 patients with postpartum alopecia and found that heredity does not play a significant role in the condition. Hair loss was most common between 8 and 16 weeks after delivery, primarily affecting the anterior scalp. While seborrhea was not a significant factor, 66.6% of patients experienced normal hair regrowth within four to six months, with nearly all participants achieving complete regrowth unless other disorders were present. The study indicates that postpartum alopecia may recur with subsequent pregnancies unless a new pregnancy occurs very early postpartum. Reassurance is the primary treatment recommended, as the condition is typically self-resolving, and hormonal changes are believed to be the cause of the hair loss.
