TLDR A rare ovarian tumor caused a postmenopausal woman to develop male-like features, which improved after surgery.
This case report described a 61-year-old postmenopausal woman who developed progressive hirsutism, deepening of voice, and scalp baldness over five years. Her condition was linked to a rare ovarian tumor, a Sclerosal stromal tumor (SST), which was confirmed through histopathology after imaging showed an enlarged right ovary. The tumor, although typically hormonally inactive, secreted androgens in this case, leading to elevated testosterone levels and virilization. Surgical removal of the tumor normalized testosterone levels and improved the virilization symptoms. The report highlighted the importance of assessing postmenopausal hirsutism and virilization for rare causes like androgen-producing tumors.
