TLDR PCOS is a hormonal disorder in women that can cause infertility and increases the risk of heart and metabolic issues.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects a significant portion of the global female population, particularly during early puberty. The exact cause remains unknown, but it leads to hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, menstrual irregularities, and ovulatory dysfunction, which can result in infertility and endometrial cancer. Both slim and obese women with PCOS face long-term cardiometabolic risks and comorbidities. The condition is diagnosed using three separate criteria, with the Rotterdam criterion being the most commonly used. Different symptoms of PCOS require different treatments, and early diagnosis and long-term treatment are crucial to manage the condition, improve the quality of life, and prevent long-term complications such as metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases.
