TLDR PNH can occur in patients with SLE, so doctors should be aware of this.
A 19-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) presented with symptoms including fever, joint pain, photosensitivity, oral ulcers, and hair loss. She was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and subsequently developed progressive anemia and dark-colored urine. Flow cytometry analysis revealed a paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) clone within her red cells. This case highlights the rare occurrence of PNH in SLE patients, emphasizing the need for clinicians to be aware of this potential association.
