TLDR Water extracts of Spondias mombin bark helped rats recover from cancer symptoms.
The study investigated the phytochemistry and efficacy of Spondias mombin bark extracts on induced cancer in rats. The bark contained alkaloids, saponins, tannins, phenolic compounds, and eugenol. The water extract of S. mombin showed significant recovery in rats with induced cancer, compared to the alcohol extract and control group. Rats treated with the water extract exhibited improvements in histopathology of the colon, liver, heart, small intestine, and lungs, while no significant changes were observed in the kidney and eye. Significant differences were noted in serum alkaline phosphatase, AST, ALT, and cholesterol levels, but not in serum calcium levels. The findings suggested that the water extract was more effective than the alcohol extract in controlling cancer in this rat model.
