TLDR Pregnancy causes temporary skin changes that are usually harmless.
During pregnancy, women experience significant hormonal, immunological, metabolic, and vascular changes that lead to various physiological skin changes, such as alterations in pigmentation, vascularity, skin appendages, and connective tissue. These changes are generally benign and temporary but can cause diagnostic confusion and concern. A narrative literature review highlights the importance of healthcare professionals recognizing these changes to differentiate them from pregnancy-related dermatoses or pre-existing skin conditions. Understanding these manifestations is crucial for guiding pregnant women appropriately and avoiding unnecessary interventions, thereby enhancing prenatal care.
