TLDR Prostaglandin D2, found in higher levels in bald scalps, stops hair growth and could be a target for treating hair loss.
In this study, the researchers analyzed samples from the scalps of individuals with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and found that prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) is involved in the development of AGA. They also discovered that PGD2 inhibits hair growth. The researchers identified GPR44 as the receptor through which PGD2 affects hair growth. This finding is significant because a prostaglandin analogue called latanoprost has been shown to stimulate hair follicle activity and treat hair loss. The study suggests that blocking GPR44 could be a potential treatment strategy for AGA.
