TLDR Finasteride, a hair loss drug, can cause long-lasting sexual side effects like low libido and erectile dysfunction.
This study examined the persistent sexual side effects of finasteride, a drug commonly used for hair loss in men. The researchers conducted interviews with 71 men who had been taking finasteride for hair loss and found that the mean duration of the sexual side effects was 40 months, with 20% of men experiencing these effects for over 6 years. The most common side effects reported were low libido, erectile dysfunction, decreased arousal, and problems with orgasm. The mechanism by which finasteride causes these changes is still unclear, but it is believed to involve alterations in brain receptors and hormonal balance. This study highlights the importance of documenting and understanding these side effects in patients using finasteride for hair loss.
