TLDR Early diagnosis and treatment of tinea capitis in children is crucial to prevent permanent hair loss and scarring.
This case series examines five pediatric patients with tinea capitis, a scalp infection that primarily affects prepubertal children and can lead to hair loss and alopecia. The study highlights the diverse clinical presentations of the condition, which can range from scalp scaling and alopecia with scaly plaques to more severe forms with suppurative lesions. It emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and prompt systemic antifungal treatment, such as terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole, to prevent irreversible outcomes like permanent alopecia and scarring. The findings underscore the necessity of timely and adequate therapeutic intervention to optimize outcomes for affected children.
