TLDR A woman's hair loss and scalp swelling, caused by a fungal infection, was wrongly treated but eventually cured with Terbinafine, emphasizing its effectiveness.
A 34-year-old female experienced hair loss and painful scalp swelling due to black dot tinea capitis, a fungal infection caused by Trichophyton tonsurans. The condition, which had been misdiagnosed and treated as androgenic alopecia, bacterial folliculitis, and seborrheic dermatitis, progressed to kerion celsi, a severe inflammatory condition. Initial treatment with oral Itraconazole was unsuccessful, but the patient was eventually cured by Terbinafine. The study suggests that the patient's previous treatments may have contributed to the development of kerion celsi from black dot tinea capitis. The study emphasizes the importance of considering tinea capitis in adults with hair loss and highlights Terbinafine as an effective first-line treatment for tinea capitis infected with Trichophyton species.
