TLDR Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) was found in 3.86% of tenth-grade girls in Guangzhou, China, with higher rates in overweight and obese girls, suggesting diagnosis should focus on hyperandrogenemia.
A cross-sectional epidemiological survey was conducted on 1294 tenth-grade schoolgirls in Guangzhou, China, to determine the prevalence of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) based on the NIH criteria. The study found a PCOS prevalence of 3.86%. The prevalence slightly increased with age and gynecological age, but the difference was not statistically significant. However, the prevalence was significantly higher in overweight and obese girls, with rates of 7.3% and 14.6% respectively, compared to 3.2% in normal weight girls. The study concluded that diagnosing adolescent PCOS should be based on hyperandrogenemia rather than the clinical manifestations of hyperandrogenism. The study acknowledged limitations, including the lack of pelvic ultrasonography examination and the limited age range of the surveyed girls.
