TLDR Women with PCOS often try to lose weight and see themselves as overweight, regardless of their actual BMI.
This study investigated the relationship between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and weight-loss attempts, finding that women with PCOS are more likely to attempt weight loss and perceive themselves as overweight compared to women without PCOS, regardless of their BMI. The study included 278 women with PCOS and 1,560 control individuals, assessed at ages 31 and 46. Results showed that 47% of women with PCOS attempted weight loss at age 31 compared to 34% of controls, and 63% at age 46 compared to 47% of controls. Additionally, women with PCOS were more likely to perceive themselves as overweight, even if they were of normal weight, with 47% at age 31 and 60% at age 46, compared to 34% and 39% of controls, respectively.
