TLDR Women with PCOS often try to lose weight and see themselves as overweight, regardless of their actual BMI.
This study, based on the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, examined 5,889 women and found that those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were more likely to attempt weight loss multiple times and perceive themselves as overweight, even with a normal BMI. Women with PCOS had higher BMIs and waist circumferences and experienced more psychological distress and a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions, emphasizing a weight-neutral approach and psychological support, as PCOS is an independent predictor of weight-loss attempts and overweight perception. Limitations include self-reported PCOS diagnosis and a lack of ethnic diversity.
