TLDR PCOS may be linked to spina bifida in young females.
This study protocol describes a prospective, cross-sectional, observational study to assess the prevalence and metabolic characteristics of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in female patients with spina bifida. Conducted at Policlinico A. Gemelli, it will involve at least 30 girls aged 12 to 18 with spina bifida. The study will evaluate metabolic and phenotypic differences between those with and without PCOS, using the Rotterdam criteria for diagnosis. It aims to explore potential correlations between spina bifida and PCOS, focusing on shared risk factors and metabolic alterations, despite the lack of prior data on this relationship. The study seeks to inform early screening recommendations and improve multidisciplinary management for these patients.
