TLDR Finasteride may cause gum problems, but stopping the drug can improve these issues.
In a study from 2018 involving 47 patients with male androgenic alopecia treated with 1 mg of Finasteride daily for at least 4 months, 12 patients experienced adverse effects on the marginal periodontium, including congestion, gingival swelling, and bleeding. These side effects were managed with local antimicrobial therapy and improved more quickly in patients who stopped taking Finasteride. The study indicates that Finasteride may cause adverse effects on the marginal periodontium, possibly due to the drug's action or changes in hormonal or immunological responses to bacterial plaque. The document also discusses other oral health cases, such as amalgam tattoo of the oral mucosa and drug-induced gingival overgrowth, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and treatment.
