TLDR Ovarian wedge resection helped regulate menstrual cycles but didn't significantly change hormone levels or hair growth in polycystic ovary syndrome.
The study investigated the effects of ovarian wedge resection on 12 patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, focusing on androgen status. Adrenal disorders were ruled out through cortisol and corticosterone metabolite tests. Pre- and postoperative assessments showed only a minor reduction in 17-ketosteroid excretion, and the stimulatory effect of hCG on ovarian androgens persisted at lower levels. Clinically, 10 patients experienced regular menstrual cycles post-surgery, and 3 became pregnant. However, hair growth did not slow, although its rate declined. The study concluded that wedge resection did not significantly alter the biochemical profile associated with polycystic ovary syndrome.
