TLDR A new benign nail tumor called onychoblastoma was identified.
A 50-year-old Peruvian man presented with a subungual verrucous mass on his toe, which was identified as a new type of benign neoplasm called onychoblastoma. This tumor, characterized by nodular structures similar to hair follicle infundibulum and follicular papilla, was distinct from previously known conditions and suggested a common origin between hair follicles and nail structures. The differential diagnosis included basal cell carcinoma, but the histological features of onychoblastoma, such as follicular differentiation, set it apart. This case highlighted the potential for new tumor types in the nail unit, expanding the understanding of adnexal tumors.
