TLDR Photobiomodulation is safe for skin rejuvenation, even for those with a cancer history.
Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy was reviewed for its oncologic safety in aesthetic skin rejuvenation. The systematic review included clinical trials, in vitro studies with human skin and neoplastic cells, and in vivo tumor models. Results indicated that red and near-infrared light enhanced healthy cell proliferation without affecting cell viability, while reducing or not affecting neoplastic cell proliferation and viability. PBM did not induce dysplastic changes in healthy cells, and in vivo tumor models showed varied results with no clear pattern. No significant adverse events, including new or recurrent malignancies, were linked to PBM in clinical trials. Overall, evidence suggested that PBM was oncologically safe for skin rejuvenation, even for patients with a history of cancer treatment.
