TLDR Photobiomodulation is safe for skin rejuvenation, even for those with a cancer history.
The systematic review assessed the oncologic safety of photobiomodulation (PBM), or low-level light therapy, for aesthetic skin rejuvenation. It analyzed 57 studies, including clinical trials and in vitro and in vivo research, and found that PBM generally enhanced the proliferation of healthy cells without significantly affecting neoplastic cells. No evidence linked PBM to dysplastic changes or significant adverse events, including new or recurrent malignancies. The review concluded that PBM was oncologically safe for skin rejuvenation, even for patients with a history of cancer treatment, although the effects varied based on specific parameters like wavelength and energy density. The review emphasized the need for optimized protocols and further large-scale studies to confirm PBM's safety and efficacy.
