The study developed a sensitive GC–MS/MS method to detect testosterone in horse hair after administering testosterone propionate to a gelding. Despite the low testosterone concentrations compared to humans and other animals, the method successfully identified testosterone in hair samples collected over 5 months post-administration. However, testosterone propionate itself was not detectable with the ion trap instrument, though it was suspected in tests using triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. This research highlighted the potential of hair analysis for monitoring drug administration in horses.
