TLDR A special diet can significantly reduce skin problems in dogs.
The study demonstrates that a specific dietary intervention (Test food, TF) significantly alleviates symptoms of atopic dermatitis (AD) in dogs by modulating immune regulation and skin microbiome composition. In a sample of 30 dogs (15 with derm disorder, 15 healthy), TF reduced pruritus, erythema, and alopecia by 42.8%, 57.1%, and 28.5%, respectively, compared to a positive control food (PC). TF also influenced gene expression related to immune regulation, wound healing, and hair follicle regeneration, and both TF and PC reduced pathogenic fungal species in the skin microbiome. The study was funded by Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc.
