TLDR Lower levels of certain nutrients after surgery may increase hair loss risk.
This study investigated the relationship between nutritional changes and hair loss in 67 patients with obesity undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Patients were categorized into no/mild hair loss (24 patients) and moderate/severe hair loss (43 patients) groups based on 3-month postoperative dermoscopic imaging. The study found that preoperative serum ferritin levels were lower in the moderate/severe hair loss group. At 1 month postoperatively, this group also had lower levels of hemoglobin, serum albumin, and calcium. Logistic regression analysis identified changes in serum albumin and calcium levels at 1 month as independent factors for postoperative hair loss. The findings suggest that monitoring and managing these nutritional parameters could help reduce the risk of alopecia following LSG.
