TLDR The Korean study confirmed that bariatric surgery is effective for weight loss in Asians.
The Korean OBEsity Surgical Treatment Study (KOBESS) conducted in 2016-2017 was a prospective, multicentre, single-arm, observational, cohort study involving 100 morbidly obese Korean patients. The patients underwent primary sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, with the primary outcomes being changes in body weight and waist circumference at 1 year. The study aimed to confirm the effectiveness of bariatric surgery in inducing weight loss in Asians, a fact previously established in Western populations. The study also assessed the remission rates of obesity-related comorbidities and the cost-effectiveness of surgical intervention. Despite a relatively small sample size, the study was considered sufficiently powered to test the hypothesis. The study also aimed to standardize and improve bariatric surgical techniques through repeated video-based review by each surgeon.
