In 2001, the FDA approved 66 new drugs, including 12 with pediatric indications that are clinically important for general pediatricians. These drugs include treatments for allergy and asthma, ADHD, birth control, and other conditions. Clarinex® is an antihistamine for allergic rhinitis and urticaria in children over 12. Foradil® Aerolizer is a long-acting beta2-agonist for asthma maintenance and prevention in children over 5 and for exercise-induced bronchospasm in those over 12. Ventolin® HFA is a short-acting beta2-agonist for acute asthma management in children over 4. Adderall XR®, Focalin®, and Metadate CD® are central nervous system stimulants for ADHD in children over 6. NuvaRing®, Ortho Evra®, and Yasmin® are contraceptives with various delivery methods. Augmentin ES-600® is an oral antibiotic for otitis media in children under 40 kg. Elidel® is an immunomodulator for atopic dermatitis in patients over 2 who don't respond to conventional therapies.
