Characterising Neurotransmitter Signalling in Human Skin and Hair Follicles

    T. Andriuskevicius, Abigail Rhodes, L C Knight, Parastoo Hashemi, Claire A. Higgins
TLDR Skin and hair cells release serotonin and histamine naturally, which could help improve skin health.
This study investigates monoamine signalling, specifically histamine and serotonin, in human skin and hair follicle cells. Using fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) and artificial neural network models, researchers found that skin fibroblasts, keratinocytes, and melanocytes can release serotonin and histamine without external triggers. Hair follicle cells showed similar but more intense signalling patterns. The study also explored release mechanisms through pharmacological interventions, revealing differences in vesicular and granular release among cell types. The findings provide a detailed understanding of neurotransmitter release in skin and hair follicles, suggesting potential interventions to enhance serotonin release, reduce histamine levels, and improve skin barrier function.
