TLDR Neurosteroids help balance brain signals when certain inhibitions are reduced.
The study investigated the role of neurosteroids in regulating inhibition in the inferior colliculus (ICC) of anesthetized rats. By blocking the GABAergic projection from the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL), researchers observed increased efficacy in other inhibitory circuits, which was prevented by inhibiting neurosteroid synthesis with finasteride. This indicated that neurosteroids were synthesized locally to balance excitatory and inhibitory inputs when GABAergic inhibition was reduced. Immunohistochemistry confirmed increased neurosteroid levels in the ICC following DNLL blockade. The study concluded that neurosteroids played a crucial role in maintaining neural circuit balance by modulating inhibition in response to changes in GABAergic input.
