TLDR Botulinum toxin may help hair growth, but more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness.
A systematic review conducted in December 2019 examined the use of botulinum toxin for treating alopecia, analyzing six studies with a total of 94 patients. The majority of these patients had androgenetic alopecia, with a few cases of alopecia areata and radiation-induced alopecia. Treatment involved varying doses and sessions, targeting all scalp muscles. Four studies reported significant hair growth improvement, with two using objective hair density measurements. Despite high patient satisfaction, the review did not conclusively demonstrate the efficacy of botulinum toxin for alopecia, highlighting the need for further prospective randomized controlled studies.
