TLDR Pituitary imaging is recommended for hyperprolactinemia due to common pituitary issues.
This retrospective multicenter study examined 168 Saudi female patients with hyperprolactinemia to explore the correlation between prolactin levels and pituitary adenomas. The study found that elevated prolactin levels were significantly associated with the presence of pituitary adenomas, with 46.1% of patients having microadenomas and 10.2% having macroadenomas. Prolactin levels above 38.71 ng/mL were identified as a moderate predictor of pituitary lesions. The study concluded that prolactin levels are a useful marker for diagnosing pituitary adenomas, emphasizing the need for pituitary imaging in hyperprolactinemic patients. However, it noted limitations such as reliance on secondary data and a limited sample size, suggesting the need for further research with larger samples and extended follow-up.
