TLDR Ganser syndrome may result from both organic and psychogenic factors.
Ganser syndrome (GS) is a rare and misunderstood psychiatric condition first described by Siegbert Ganser in 1897 during his study of mental disorders in prisoners. Historically classified as a dissociative disorder in DSM-4, it is no longer listed in DSM-5, likely due to its rarity. Despite being frequently overlooked, GS is relevant in both clinical and forensic psychiatry. There is ongoing debate about whether GS is an organic or psychogenic disorder, with evidence suggesting that both factors may contribute to its development.
