TLDR An integrated approach involving dermatologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists is crucial for managing skin disorders linked to psychological factors.
Psychodermatology is an interdisciplinary field that examines the interactions between psychological factors and skin disorders, highlighting the need for better training among healthcare professionals. The field recognizes that biological, psychological, and social factors contribute to skin diseases, with recent studies focusing on the skin-nervous system connection. Despite existing classifications, there is no consensus on definitions for psychodermatological disorders. Many dermatology patients have secondary psychiatric issues that are often overlooked, emphasizing the importance of dermatologists being able to provide basic treatments and refer patients to psychiatrists when necessary. An integrated approach involving dermatologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists is crucial for effectively managing these complex disorders.
