TLDR Chemical treatments like dyeing, perming, and bleaching damage hair by altering amino acids and lipids.
This study investigated the effects of chemical treatments like perming, dyeing, and bleaching on the amino acids and lipids in human hair. Using metabolomic analysis, the researchers found significant alterations in 18 amino acids and various lipids, including ceramides and free fatty acids, which are crucial for hair's mechanical strength and barrier function. The study identified cysteic acid as a marker for bleach-induced damage and noted that treatments depleted important lipids such as 18-methyl eicosanoic acid. These findings suggested that amino acid and lipid changes could serve as biomarkers for assessing hair damage, potentially aiding in the development of safer hair care products. The study involved 10 hair tresses for detailed analysis.
