TLDR Different PCOS subgroups have similar metabolic features, but those without menstrual problems have milder issues.
The study involved 95 women with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and aimed to compare the metabolic features of different PCOS subgroups. The classical PCOS phenotype was more common (74.7%) than the non-classical phenotype (25.2%). Body mass indexes, waist-hip ratios, and cholesterol levels were similar across all groups. However, the subgroup of PCOS without menstrual dysfunction had significantly lower serum triglyceride and insulin levels, indicating milder metabolic disturbances. The subgroup of PCOS without hyperandrogenism had similar metabolic disturbances to the classical PCOS groups. The study concluded that these findings support the inclusion of these new groups in the broad PCOS spectrum and affirm the importance of PCO morphology as a diagnostic criterion for PCOS.
