TLDR People with androgenetic alopecia may have a higher risk of heart problems compared to those with alopecia areata or healthy individuals.
The study titled "Metabolic syndrome and alopecia: A case-control study" aimed to quantify the presence of metabolic syndrome factors in patients with different types of alopecia compared to healthy controls. The study included 60 alopecia patients, split evenly between those with alopecia areata (AA) and androgenetic alopecia (AGA), and 60 matched control subjects by age and gender. The presence of metabolic risk factors such as hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, low levels of HDL, high abdominal perimeter, and hypertension were assessed, along with smoking status. The results indicated that metabolic risk factors were higher in AGA patients than in AA patients, and AGA patients had higher scores in metabolic parameters compared to control subjects. The study concluded that the cardiovascular risk profiles of patients with AGA and AA are different, suggesting that AGA patients may have a higher risk of cardiovascular issues.
