TLDR Mesotherapy and platelet-rich plasma treatments may help with hair loss, but their safety and effectiveness are still uncertain.
In 2014, a study reviewed the efficacy and safety of mesotherapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments for hair loss, which had become popular but lacked sufficient documented evidence to prove their effectiveness. PRP, prepared using special devices, activates growth factors within platelets, inducing cellular proliferation and natural wound healing processes. It was found to stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of stem cells in hair follicles, and in vivo studies showed increased proliferation of dermal papilla cells and quicker transition from the telogen phase to the anagen phase in PRP-treated groups. However, the evidence supporting PRP's effectiveness in treating androgenetic alopecia was weak, and further studies were needed. For alopecia areata, one study showed PRP to be effective, but due to the disease's spontaneous remission, its true effectiveness was hard to determine. The study concluded that while some studies supported the effectiveness of mesotherapy and PRP in treating hair loss, their safety and efficacy were still debatable.
