TLDR Menopause significantly affects skin health and conditions.
This review examined the impact of menopause on skin disorders, noting that decreased oestrogen levels were linked to increased transepidermal water loss, reduced dermal collagen, and conditions like xerosis, pruritus, and psoriasis. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) showed potential in mitigating some effects, such as increasing dermal collagen, but had side effects like hirsutism and acne. The relationship between menopause and conditions like rosacea and hidradenitis suppurativa remained unclear. The review emphasized the need for further research to understand the mechanisms and explore therapeutic options for skin conditions related to menopause.
