Membrane Androgen Receptors May Mediate Androgen Reinforcement

TLDR Androgen self-administration might be controlled by membrane receptors, not nuclear ones.
The study demonstrated that androgen self-administration in rats and hamsters was mediated by membrane-associated androgen receptors rather than classical nuclear androgen receptors. Both wild-type (WT) and testicular feminization mutant (Tfm) rats showed a preference for self-administering dihydrotestosterone (DHT) over a vehicle, with no significant genotype differences. Hamsters also preferred DHT and its conjugates over BSA alone. The findings suggested that androgens might act at the neuronal plasma membrane to exert reinforcing effects, as evidenced by the self-administration behavior and the lack of necessity for nuclear androgen receptors. The study also highlighted species-specific differences in operant responding and noted potential caveats such as the in vivo degradation of DHT-BSA conjugates.
