The study investigated the antibacterial activity of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) pericarp extracts against Propionibacterium acnes, a bacterium associated with acne. The pericarp was extracted using methanol, and the extracts were further partitioned with hexane, ethyl acetate, and water. The active compound α-mangostin was identified using thin-layer chromatography. Among the extracts, the ethyl acetate extract demonstrated the strongest antibacterial effect, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.63 µg/ml and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 19.06 µg/ml. The study concluded that ethyl acetate extract of mangosteen pericarp was most effective in inhibiting P. acnes growth.
