TLDR Tamsulosin hydrochloride is safe and effective for long-term treatment of urinary symptoms in BPH patients.
The study evaluated the long-term efficacy and safety of tamsulosin hydrochloride in 113 patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) over a 60-week period. After an initial 12-week phase, patients showing significant improvement continued with tamsulosin alone or in combination with finasteride. Results showed a statistically significant improvement in the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax), with IPSS improving by 30.3% and Qmax increasing by 3.0 ml/s by the end of the study. Quality of life scores also improved significantly. There were 24 adverse events reported, including dizziness and diarrhea, but no serious adverse events occurred. The study concluded that tamsulosin was a safe, effective, and well-tolerated long-term treatment for LUTS/BPH.
