TLDR Young patients are more likely to develop autoimmune diseases, while elderly patients are more prone to organ failure after DRESS.
The study investigated the long-term sequelae and prognosis of patients with DRESS/drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome in a cohort from northern Taiwan. Out of 52 patients, 6 (11.5%) developed long-term sequelae, including autoimmune diseases such as Graves disease, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and autoimmune hemolytic anemia, as well as renal failure requiring lifetime hemodialysis. Alopecia areata was observed in 1 patient with Graves disease. The study concluded that young patients were more likely to develop autoimmune diseases, while elderly patients were more prone to end-organ failure. The study was limited by its small sample size and lack of viral studies.
