Localized Telogen Effluvium Following Hair Transplantation

TLDR Some people may temporarily lose more hair in certain areas after a hair transplant.
The document reports on two cases of localized telogen effluvium following hair transplantation. In the first case, a 51-year-old female patient experienced frontal and bitemporal shedding and thinning three months after undergoing a hair transplantation of 2,000 follicles. In the second case, a 40-year-old healthy male patient reported similar symptoms two weeks after his hair transplantation. Physical examinations and scalp biopsies of both patients showed increased numbers of telogen hair follicles and no perifollicular inflammatory cell infiltration, which are consistent with telogen effluvium. The patients were reassured and monitored without any treatment. The study concludes that localized telogen effluvium can occur as a temporary condition after hair transplantation due to factors such as diminished blood supply, direct trauma to the hair follicles, or the stress of the operation, and that patients should be informed of this possibility. Dermatologic surgeons should be aware that spontaneous recovery is expected. No commercial support was identified for this study.
