TLDR Low-level laser therapy may help regrow hair in dogs with non-inflammatory hair loss.
In a pilot study published in 2015, low-level laser therapy (LLLT) was tested for its efficacy in promoting hair regrowth in dogs with non-inflammatory alopecia (CNA). The study involved seven dogs of various ages, breeds, and genders, all diagnosed with CNA through clinical and histopathological means. These dogs underwent LLLT treatment twice weekly for up to two months. The laser used emitted three different wavelengths from 21 foci and the treated areas showed significant improvement in hair coat regrowth in six out of seven dogs, with one dog showing some improvement. Histological evaluation from one dog showed an increase in hair density and a higher percentage of haired follicles in the treated area compared to the untreated control area. The study concluded that LLLT has promising effects on hair regrowth in CNA, suggesting a potential non-pharmacological treatment option for this condition.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
