TLDR Lupus significantly affects men's self-image, with many struggling to fulfill traditional masculine roles.
A study involving 182 men with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) from 24 European countries explored how lupus affects their self-image. The survey revealed that 3 out of 4 male lupus patients experience significant impacts on their self-image due to the disease. Specifically, 27% reported difficulty fulfilling traditional masculine roles, 17% felt diminished self-worth, and 10% noted changes in physical appearance affecting their self-image. Additionally, 8% felt a loss of connection to their masculinity, while 7% developed adaptive coping mechanisms. The study highlights the need for tailored support to help male lupus patients manage these psychosocial and identity-related challenges.
