TLDR Long-term use of hormonal contraceptives may harm liver function.
A study involving 46 women aged 25-45 examined the impact of hormonal contraceptives on liver function, revealing that contraceptive users, particularly those using combined oral contraceptives, had significantly higher liver enzyme levels compared to non-users. Women over 45 showed higher liver functional parameters than younger women. These findings suggest that prolonged use of hormonal contraceptives may negatively affect liver function, highlighting the need for careful screening and monitoring of liver function in women using long-term hormonal contraception. Further research is needed to determine the clinical significance of these enzyme elevations.
