TLDR Certain gene variations might help protect against insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in people with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
The 2011 study examined the relationship between lipin 1 gene polymorphisms and metabolic and hormonal profiles in 222 patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and 149 controls. It focused on two specific polymorphisms: rs11693809 and rs2716610. The findings revealed that the rs11693809 polymorphism was associated with lower LDL-cholesterol in controls and lower glucose levels after an oral glucose tolerance test in PCOS patients. Additionally, nonobese PCOS patients with the T/T genotype had lower insulin resistance. The rs2716610 polymorphism was linked to higher plasma triglycerides in controls but had no significant association with metabolic or hormonal profiles in PCOS patients. The study concluded that the rs11693809 polymorphism might protect against insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in PCOS patients, suggesting a potential genetic factor in the cardiometabolic complications associated with PCOS.
