TLDR Lipid content and structure affect water absorption in different hair types.
This study examines the role of lipids in water permeation across different curl pattern hair types, specifically CP2 (Asian) and CP3 (Caucasian) hair. It finds that CP2 hair has a higher amount of both external and internal lipids, particularly polar lipids like ceramides, which result in lower water absorption compared to CP3 hair. The research highlights that lipid composition and structure significantly influence water diffusion in hair, impacting cosmetic treatment outcomes. Lipid extraction experiments show that removing lipids increases water content and decreases diffusion, especially in CP2 fibers, suggesting that lipids are crucial in modulating water dynamics in hair. The study concludes that differences in water content and diffusion between the two hair types are primarily due to lipid content and structure.

The conversation discusses making a topical melatonin solution for hair loss treatment, questioning if isopropyl alcohol can dissolve melatonin. Melatonin is soluble in lipids and alcohol, but it's unstable and should be mixed fresh regularly; it may help hair growth by affecting certain cellular signaling pathways and has anti-androgenic effects.

Accepting baldness and the various ways people try to cope with it, such as shaving, using medications like minoxidil and finasteride, or getting a hair transplant. Participants discussed how true acceptance of hair loss involves confronting difficult emotions such as grief for one's former appearance and identity, as opposed to simply superficially hiding it with a shaved head.

community Topical finasteride now the safest possible path?

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  84 upvotes 1 year ago
Topical finasteride is considered a safer option for hair regrowth with fewer systemic side effects compared to oral finasteride. Some users report similar efficacy and side effects between topical and oral treatments, while others prefer topical due to reduced systemic exposure.

Minoxidil with alcohol and propylene glycol was more effective than non-alcohol versions, and RU58841 worked best in a non-water-based solution. Oral finasteride showed better results than topical, despite side effects; microneedling and tretinoin worsened hair loss, and PRP was only helpful when younger.
