TLDR Finasteride use may cause sexual dysfunction; more research needed.
This letter to the editor critiques a study that attempted to identify the underlying causes of sexual dysfunction and depression in men who used finasteride for hair loss. The author argues that the study's conclusions are premature and that additional information and clarification are necessary. The author suggests that epigenetic changes due to finasteride use might have contributed to persistent sexual dysfunction and that the study's functional magnetic resonance imaging analyses have important and distinct differences from those of psychogenic erectile dysfunction studies. The author concludes that a well-designed epidemiological study is necessary to demonstrate a causal relationship between finasteride use and persistent sexual symptoms.
