TLDR Vitamin D3 analogs can stimulate hair growth in mice with alopecia.
The study investigated the role of vitamin D3 and its synthetic analogs in stimulating hair growth in nude mice with congenital alopecia. It was found that while the active form of vitamin D3, 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3, did not affect hair growth, its synthetic analogs significantly stimulated hair growth in these mice. The hair growth was cyclical and accompanied by the formation of normal hair follicles and increased expression of specific keratins. The results suggested that vitamin D3 analogs could initiate hair follicle cycling and stimulate hair growth by acting on keratinocytes.
