A Case of Kerion Celsi Caused by Microsporum Gypseum (Arthroderma Gypseum) in a Child

    TLDR A 10-year-old boy recovered from a scalp infection caused by a fungus after treatment with itraconazole.
    A 10-year-old boy in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, presented with kerion celsi caused by Microsporum gypseum, characterized by a scaly erythematous plaque and alopecia. Initial treatments with steroid lotions and antibiotics were ineffective. Diagnosis was confirmed through direct examination and molecular analysis, identifying the fungus as M. gypseum, specifically the A. gypseum (-) mating type. The patient was successfully treated with itraconazole at a dosage of 50 mg/day for 4.5 months, leading to recovery.
