TLDR Keratin fibrils in hair form and stop growing at specific points in the follicle.
The study examined the development of keratin fibrils in the hair cortex using electron microscopy, detailing the morphology, fibrillar material amount, and fibril diameter at various levels. It found that fibrils formed approximately 400 μ above the undifferentiated matrix cells and ceased forming about 300 μ further up. The study also observed the packing of filaments in both longitudinal and cross sections, providing evidence for their aggregation into twisted cables.
