TLDR Iron supplements may improve hair loss satisfaction even if initial iron levels are normal.
The observational study conducted at a tertiary care university hospital involved 200 women diagnosed with Telogen effluvium (TE), a common cause of hair loss in women. The study aimed to assess the response of TE to iron supplementation. The results suggest that oral iron supplementation is beneficial in treating TE, even if the serum ferritin baseline level is not low or not known. A higher daily dose of elemental iron and a prolonged duration of treatment significantly improved the patient’s level of satisfaction. Neither the patient’s age nor a history of treated dysthyroidism or recent COVID-19 affected the patient’s response. However, the study had several limitations, including a short duration and lack of objective evaluation of the response. Future research with a larger sample is needed to validate these observations.
