TLDR Low iron levels are linked to certain types of hair loss.
The cross-sectional study conducted from June 2018 to April 2019, involving 50 participants with non-cicatricial alopecias, aimed to evaluate the relationship between iron and hair loss. The study found a significant association between the diagnosis of non-cicatricial alopecia and mean values of haemoglobin and serum ferritin. Lower haemoglobin and low serum ferritin were mostly associated with male pattern hair loss. The study also found that 70% of the participants were males and 30% were females, with a mean age of 44 years. The trichogram results showed telogen hair in 44% of the participants, dystrophic hair loss in 28%, and anagen hair loss in 28%. The hair pull test was positive in 54% of the participants.
