Role of Iron Deficiency in Chronic Diffuse Hair Loss

    Shruti Shrivastava, Meenakshi Sidhar
TLDR Iron deficiency may cause hair loss, but more research is needed.
The document reviewed various studies on the role of iron deficiency in chronic diffuse hair loss, particularly among women. Several studies, such as those by Moeinvaziri et al. (2009) and Deloche et al. (2007), indicated a correlation between low iron stores and increased hair loss. Kantor et al. (2003) found decreased serum ferritin associated with alopecia in women. However, other studies, like those by Sinclair (2002) and Bregy and Trueb (2008), did not find a clear association between low serum ferritin levels and hair loss. The overall conclusion suggested that while there is evidence supporting the link between iron deficiency and hair loss, the relationship is not universally agreed upon, indicating the need for further research.
